Use it or Lose it


Can you feel it?  Spring is in the air!  The days are longer, mornings are brighter and there is new found energy blooming. Hibernation is over.  It’s time to get outside and play...

Our bodies love to move.  Have you ever heard of the phrase “Use it or lose it”?  When it comes to your body, it’s true! Your body is at its best when it gets enough physical activity.

Appropriate physical activity can reduce inflammation in the body and reduce your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases. It can improve your mood, your appearance, your sleep, help you manage stress, delay the aging process and have you looking and feeling younger for your entire life.  What’s not to love? 

So, why do we sometimes fall short for our body’s natural craving for movement?  When you hear the word “exercise,” do you feel excited or do you feel dread and anticipate boredom?  If our bodies are meant to move, love moving, crave movement, why are so many people not moving regularly?

When exercise becomes a job, you may need an “activity makeover.” Think for a moment about what kind of exercise would be fun instead of dull and torturous. What kind of movement did you love as a child?  Perhaps you can’t stand the thought of a gym and a treadmill, but maybe you miss taking dance classes? How about yoga or ice skating? What about joining a walking club, swimming, biking, or playing soccer with your kids? There are so many styles of exercise for you to try-on, it’s really up to you to find the perfect fit.

So as we spring into spring, think about what types of movement sound exciting and try something new. Ignite the energy within your physical self and have some fun. Your body, mind and soul will thank you.
