It is a well known fact that injuries occur with sports participation. Injuries are just as likely to occur during practices as they are during games. As sport involvement is becoming more year-round, we are seeing a rise in the rate of overuse/overtraining injuries. In an attempt to reduce the incidence of injury, ProEx would like to offer some tips for Sports Safety.
Parents- Education Empowers!
• Learn the risks of each sport and educate your child on the physical demands of the game and make sure he or she wants to participate in that sport.
• First and foremost, make sure your child respects the rules and regulations of the sport.
• Remember, the coach is the boss during a sporting event.
• Make sure you help your child manage their injuries early. See our Acute Injury Management tip!
Athletes- Be Proactive!
• Understand the high risk activities of your sport, especially contact sports. Stay alert and pay attention.
• Cardiovascular shape, speed and power provide the edge. Injuries are more likely to occur when you are tired and in a weakened physical state. Take yourself out for a break if you are too tired to perform.
• Make sure you are in good physical condition heading into the season and maintain it during the season. If needed, consult with a Strength and Conditioning coach.
• Utilize proper safety equipment as required by the sport, and check all equipment regularly to ensure it fits and is working properly.
• Examine the playing surface for any signs of danger (wet spots, holes in the ground, etc.).
• Allow adequate time for warming up and stretching prior to participation, your body needs to be ready to compete.
• Find time for water breaks.
• Make sure you report your injuries early to your parent, coach or athletic trainer; this is the key to prevention!
Coaches- Preparation is Paramount!
• A coach or activity supervisor should be certified in First Aid and CPR.
• Stress the importance of safety to all your athletes. Make sure they look out for one another.
• Have a plan of action in place in the event of an emergency.
• Always have a phone readily available.
• If an injury is to occur, follow the directions of qualified medical professionals.
• Make sure your athletes take care of their injuries early and always stay informed by speaking with the athlete, parents, and sports medicine professionals!

Sports Medicine is a healthcare specialty field that works primarily with injuries and illness resulting from participation in sport and exercise.
Are there a variety of careers available in the Sports Medicine field?
Yes! Careers in the Sports Medicine field include Physical Therapist, Athletic Trainer, Physician, Exercise Physiologist, and the list goes on and on. If you are interested in getting into Sports Medicine then make sure the college or university that you are looking at offers degrees in these professions and do the research on each individual career to asses which will be the right fit for you.
How many Sports Medicine Professionals are employed at ProEx?
Currently, ProEx employs 36 Physical Therapists, 4 Physical Therapy Assistants, 18 Exercise Technicians, and 5 Athletic Trainers. Our Sports Medicine Professionals work in our 11 clinics, and provide athletic training services to local high schools and athletic organizations through out New England.
What are typical injuries that Sports Medicine Professionals see?
While Sports Medicine professionals have the knowledge and expertise to evaluate and treat a variety of injuries, the injuries most often seen fall into 2 categories; trauma and overuse. The common diagnoses are sprains, strains, contusions, fractures, and concussion.
