Carpal tunnel syndrome is the primary cause of most wrist pain, occurring when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed. This nerve and other tendons in your forearm pass through a channel in your wrist known as the 'carpal tunnel'. When this 'tunnel' shrinks for any number of reasons, compression on the median nerve occurs. The condition can be caused by a number of factors that include both injuries and overuse.
Examples of these causes are broken or sprained wrists, or repetitive use of the wrist such as with typing and computer work. Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include pain, numbness, or tingling in the wrist and all fingers of the hand. Pain can also travel up the the elbow or shoulder, and a general weakness of the hands and fingers may persist.
